DEMOGRAPHER

About

I’m a professor of sociology at the University of Western Ontario, trained in sociology and demography at Princeton University. My research examines how health varies across populations, why these differences arise, and how they change over time. Much of my recent work focuses on chronic pain, bringing a demographic perspective to an important but understudied dimension of population health.

Outside work, I love nonfiction books, being outdoors kayaking and skiing, and visiting with my young adult children in their new home cities.

Research

I study population health and social inequality, focusing on how health differs across socioeconomic groups and geographic contexts, and how these differences change over time. My work has examined disability trends, education as a social determinant of health and mortality, and the role of social and policy environments in shaping population health.

A major focus of my recent research is chronic pain. Despite its substantial burden, particularly among older adults, pain has received relatively little attention in demography and population health research My work brings a population perspective to chronic pain. I examine pain trends, disparities, and life-course trajectories; the broader conditions that shape them; and how chronic pain is defined and measured in national surveys.
